Two extremes, monks, are not to be approached by him who has withdrawn from the world. Which two? One is that which is linked and connected with lust, through sensuous pleasures, because it is low, of the uncultured, of the mediocre man, ignoble and profitless. The other is that which is connected with mortification and asceticism, because it is painful, ignoble, incapable of achieving the target. Avoiding both these extremes, monks, take the Middle Path,... which brings insight, brings knowledge, and leads to tranquility, to full knowledge, to full enlightenment, to Nirvana.
And monks, what is this Middle Path that leads to Nirvana? It is indeed, the Noble Eightfold Path, namely right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. The Middle Path leads to Nirvana.
(b) Now monks, this is the Noble Truth as to sorrow. Birth (earthly existence) indeed is sorrowful. Disease, death, union with the unpleasing, separation from the pleasing is sorrowful; in brief, desirous transient individuality (five grasping aggregates) is sorrowful.
Again, monks, this is the Noble Truth as to the origin of sorrow. It is the recurring greed, associated with enjoyment and desire and seeking pleasure everywhere, which is the cause of this sorrow. In other words, it is the greed for sense-pleasure, greed for individual existence, and the greed for non-existence.
Again, monks, this is the Noble Truth as to the cessation of sorrow... the complete cessation, giving up, abandoning, release and detachment from greed..
And this once more, monks, is the Noble Truth as to the path to the cessation of sorrow. It is indeed that Noble Eightfold Path: right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. The Middle Path, monks, leads to Nirvana.
(c) As soon, monks, as my knowledge and sight concerning these four Noble Truths became complete, I knew that I had attained supreme and full enlightenment. I became aware and fully convinced that my mind was liberated, that existence in its unhappy form had ended, that there would no longer be an unhappy survival.
